Critics generally found The Crowned Clown an entertaining palace comedy-drama, with its lead performance and comic-serious tonal balance carrying a story that some felt lost momentum in its middle stretch.

## Synopsis

The Crowned Clown (2019) is a South Korean historical drama series created by Kim Hee-won for tvN, a single-season run of sixteen episodes. Yeo Jin-goo plays Clown Ha-seon, a look-alike entertainer who is pressed into standing in for the unhinged King Yi-heon, while Lee Se-young plays Yoo So-Woon and Kim Sang-kyung plays Lee Kyu among the principal court figures. The engine of the story is a commoner trying to survive a palace where every misstep is fatal, as the clown must keep up the king's appearance while the real monarch's erratic behavior threatens the realm. Each episode builds the court politics and the disguise in a continuing arc rather than a case of the week, giving the season a serialized shape. Set in Joseon dynasty Korea, the series moves between the palace halls and the streets where ordinary people feel the consequences of royal decisions. The tone blends comic court intrigue with sincere loyalty and a growing sense of responsibility, so viewers who enjoy the playful reversals of royal body double stories and the scheming of palace dramas will find resonance. Fans of Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and The Face Reader will find a similar mix of royal intrigue and character warmth here.
