## Synopsis

Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes (2019) is an American true crime documentary miniseries created by Joe Berlinger and released on Netflix. Rather than relying on a narrator, the four hour-long episodes are assembled from statements made by Ted Bundy himself, woven together with present-day interviews, archival news footage, and audio recordings made on death row. Journalist Stephen Michaud and reporter Hugh Aynesworth appear as principal interviewees who knew the case from the inside, and FBI Special Agent Bill Hagmaier offers the investigators' perspective. The engine of the series is the gap between what Bundy says about himself and what the surrounding evidence and witnesses reveal, so each episode becomes a contest between a manipulative, articulate voice and the record of his crimes. The format is a single limited run rather than a continuing story. Its setting is the 1970s United States, and its tone is austere, unsettling, and clinical, with an atmosphere of quiet dread that comes from listening to a killer explain himself calmly. Fans of The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst and Mindhunter will find resonance in its study of a predator's psychology and its use of recorded testimony.
