## Synopsis

Stephen Fry in America (2008) is a British-American travel documentary miniseries created for BBC One, hosted by Stephen Fry. Across six hour-long episodes, Fry himself is the sole on-screen presence, travelling across the United States with the stated goal of visiting all 50 states, a country that has long fascinated him. The engine of the show is simple and personal: his curiosity pushes him from one state to the next, and each episode is built from the places he reaches, the people he meets, and the landscapes and local histories he encounters along the way. The shape is that of a single continuous journey rather than a case-of-the-week format, so episodes accumulate into a portrait of a vast nation seen through an outsider's eyes. The register is warm, witty and observational, with a literate, conversational voice that favours curiosity over cynicism. Fry's erudition and humour give the travelogue its charm, and the production has the polished, understated look of a British documentary. Viewers who enjoy host-driven road trips, from Long Way Round to Bill Bryson's wry accounts of American life, will find the same mix of personality and place here. It suits anyone who likes gentle, curious television about a country seen fresh.
