## Synopsis

The Good Lord Bird (2020) is a seven-episode American limited series created by Mark Richard and Ethan Hawke for Showtime, a dark historical comedy-drama in the western tradition. Joshua Caleb Johnson plays Henry 'Little Onion' Shackleford, a newly freed teenager who survives by passing as a girl, and Ethan Hawke plays the fiery abolitionist John Brown, whose holy war against slavery draws the boy into a restless band of followers. Their engine is a rolling journey across antebellum America, where Onion wants safety and belonging while Brown's certainty pushes the group toward ever more dangerous confrontations. Each episode moves through encounters with figures of the movement, including Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, as the group edges toward the 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry. Set in 1850s America, the show is irreverent, lively and sharply satirical, yet it keeps a raw, unsettling undertone about violence and bondage. Its tone blends picaresque adventure with bleak humor and moral unease. Fans of Deadwood, True Grit and Django Unchained will find resonance in its mix of frontier wandering, historical grit and dark comedy.
