## Synopsis

Gogol (2019) is a Russian miniseries created by Tikhon Kornev, Aleksey Karaulov and Olexander Tsekalo for TV-3. Set in 1829 imperial Russia, it follows Nikolay Gogol (Alexander Petrov), a young Third Section clerk whose writing feels hollow and who suffers violent epileptic seizures. Investigator Yakov Guro (Oleg Menshikov) witnesses one of these fits and realizes that the visions carry clues to real crimes. Together they are drawn into a strange and baffling case in the small village of Dikanka, where nearly everyone is hiding something. Across eight episodes of roughly fifty-five minutes each, the story unfolds as a single continuing mystery, with each episode peeling back another layer of local secrets. The atmosphere is eerie and melancholic, with folkloric shadows and a fairy tale undercurrent that recalls the author's own Ukrainian tales. Its blend of period detail, supernatural unease and a mismatched detective partnership makes it a good pick for viewers who enjoy gothic mysteries. Fans of Penny Dreadful, Sherlock and Twin Peaks will find resonance in its mix of historical texture, uncanny village dread and a partnership built on unusual gifts. Violence appears in the mystery, and the tone stays brooding throughout.
