## Synopsis

The Countryside (El pueblo) (2019-2023) is a Spanish comedy-drama ensemble series created by Alberto Caballero, Julián Sastre and Nando Abad for Prime Video. Urbanites with very different reasons for leaving the city, including existential crisis, economic hardship, a need for fresh air and a search for peace, arrive in an abandoned town intending to start their lives over from scratch. Their plans unravel when they discover that some neighbors still live there: rural residents with a very different way of seeing life. Carlos Areces plays Juanjo Soler, one of the newcomers, alongside Silvia Casanova as Emilia Palenque, Ruth Díaz as Laura Gascón and Ángel Jodrá as Cándido Quintanilla, with Vicente Gil and Empar Ferrer among the principal cast. The engine of the show is the daily friction between the outsiders and the locals, as the two groups share water, work, gossip and ambition across eight-episode seasons that build a shared community over four seasons. Set in present-day rural Spain, the series mixes gentle satire with warm, sometimes melancholic observation about urban escape and the fading countryside. Fans of Northern Exposure, Doc Martin and Aquí no hay quien viva will find resonance in its ensemble cast, culture-clash comedy and affectionate portrait of small-town life.
