## Synopsis

A Certain Scientific Accelerator (2019) is a Japanese animated science fiction action series created as a J.C.STAFF production for AT-X, adapted from the Toaru franchise manga. Its protagonist is Accelerator, the most powerful esper in Academy City, a sealed-off metropolis where students develop psychic abilities that are ranked and exploited. Voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto, Accelerator is recovering in hospital after a bullet wound when a mysterious girl appears asking for help. His companion is Last Order, the child clone he rescued, voiced by Rina Hidaka, and together with Estelle Rosenthal (Yurika Kubo) and Aiho Yomikawa (Yuhko Kaida) he takes on Disciplinary Action, an anti-evil coalition whose schemes threaten the city and beyond. The engine is a reluctant killer trying to protect the innocent while the enemies he confronts grow larger with each episode. The single twelve-episode season is a serialized run of twenty-four-minute episodes built around escalating fights, shifting alliances and power clashes. Set in a near-future Japanese city of ability ranking and cold institutional control, the series carries a dark, propulsive mood, with a gritty urban thriller texture and a brooding sense of moral ambiguity. Fans of Toaru Majutsu no Index, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun and Psycho-Pass will find resonance in its esper politics, lone guardian menace and cityscape of secret experiments.
