## Synopsis

The Last Czars (2019) is a British docudrama miniseries created for Netflix, a single six-episode season of roughly 45 minutes each. Dramatizing the final years of imperial Russia, it follows Czar Nicholas II, played by Robert Jack as Nicky, as he clings to autocratic power while social upheaval spreads through the country. Alongside him, Oliver Dimsdale plays Pierre, Ben Cartwright plays the mystic Rasputin, and Susanna Herbert plays Alix, with the court's private rivalries and marital strains unfolding against the mounting crisis. Rather than a single heist or case, the engine is the slow collision between a dynasty's stubborn instincts and a population demanding change, staged through reenacted palace councils, intimate family scenes and street-level unrest. Set in early twentieth century imperial Russia, the series builds a sombre, melodramatic atmosphere in which personal loyalties feel inseparable from national catastrophe. Its tone is solemn and intimate, with tension rising steadily toward the revolution. Viewers who appreciated the period intrigue of The Crown and the reenacted weight of Chernobyl will find it a sober, absorbing account of a fallen monarchy.
