## Synopsis

1899 (2022) is a German Netflix mystery drama created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, a single-season eight-episode series that follows a bewildered group of passengers aboard an immigrant ship bound for New York. Emily Beecham plays Maura Franklin and Andreas Pietschmann plays Eyk Larsen, with Aneurin Barnard as Daniel Solace and Isabella Wei as Ling Yi among the principal figures trying to make sense of strange events that disrupt the crossing. The engine of the show is a riddle: passengers search for explanations while unsettling occurrences, hidden alliances and fractured memories multiply in the confined decks and corridors of the vessel. Each hour unfolds at a deliberate, contemplative pace, letting silence, sound design and candlelit interiors carry the unease. Set in 1899 on the Atlantic, the series builds a melancholic, paranoid and atmospheric world that rewards patient viewers. Fans of Dark, Lost and The Leftovers will find resonance in its layered puzzle and its quiet dread. The story was canceled after one season, leaving its central mystery unresolved.
