## Synopsis

The Monster (2019) is an Iranian comedy drama series created by Mehran Modiri for Namava. Farhad Aslani plays Houshang Sherafat, a simple, honest schoolteacher satisfied with a modest life and little interest in the wider world, whose life tilts when he unwittingly slides into embezzlement and fraud. Mehran Modiri (Kamran Kamrava), Shabnam Moghadami (Shohreh) and Gohar Kheyrandish (Mehri) orbit him as family and acquaintances whose lives shift with his new fortune. The engine of the series is the gap between who Houshang was and who the money makes him, with each episode built from the awkward consequences of sudden wealth and the schemes that spiral from it. Presented as a single season of nineteen episodes, it is a contained, self-finishing story set in contemporary Iran. Its tone is wry and satirical, mixing light comedy with a quieter drama about ambition, temptation and self-recognition. Fans of Breaking Bad, Fargo and Ozark will find resonance in its ordinary man pulled into crime and its dark humor about respectability.
