## Synopsis

Preso No. 1 (2019) is a US-produced Spanish-language telenovela created for Telemundo, a one-season serialized soap built on the melodramatic politics of a nation. Erik Hayser plays Carmelo Alvarado, a humble farmer whose rise to the presidency of Mexico is cut short when he is falsely accused of fraud and jailed. Alejandra Ambrosi plays Carolina Arteaga, and Paulina Matos and Arturo Peniche round out the cast as family members and political figures drawn into the scandal. The engine of the show is simple and relentless: Carmelo must fight back from behind bars against the corrupt system behind the scheme while keeping his family intact. Each episode is built from prison confrontations, family strain, backroom political maneuvering and reversals of fortune. The sixty-four episodes form one continuing story rather than standalone cases, so order matters throughout. The setting is a present-day Mexico of power brokers, courtrooms and cellblocks. Tone runs emotional and heightened, with anguish, loyalty and righteous anger driving the melodrama. Fans of Destilando amor, Ugly Betty and House of Cards will find resonance in its mix of soap sentiment and political intrigue.
