## Synopsis

The Thorn and the Rose (2000-2001) is a Brazilian telenovela created by Walcyr Carrasco and Mário Teixeira for TV Globo. Adriana Esteves plays Catarina Batista, a spoiled, self-proclaimed feminist and daughter of a wealthy father, who insists she feels nothing for the rustic farmer Julião Petruchio, played by Eduardo Moscovis. Their clashing pride and class difference drive the romance, and Catarina's refusal to admit her own feelings keeps the sparks flying. Leandra Leal plays her sister Bianca, while Ângelo Antônio appears as Professor Edmundo das Neves, and Luís Melo plays Nicanor Batista, adding family and rival complications to the central love story. The series unfolds as a single long run of 221 episodes, a classic daily soap with the sprawl and cliffhangers the format demands. Its tone blends melodrama with comedy, romantic and playful, with a heightened, colorful sense of Brazilian small-town and rural life. Fans of Pantanal, A Escrava Isaura and the sharp-tongued romance of Pride and Prejudice will find resonance in its mix of sweeping passion, social friction and wit.
