## Synopsis

A Confession (2019) is a British true crime drama miniseries created by Jeff Pope for ITV1. Martin Freeman plays Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, a senior officer who deliberately breaches police procedure and protocol in pursuit of a killer, and the decision ends up costing him his career and reputation. Siobhan Finneran plays Elaine Pickford and Imelda Staunton plays Karen Edwards among the principal figures around the investigation. The engine of the story is the tension between a detective's conscience and the institutional rules he is expected to follow, with each episode built around the procedural decisions, the pressure from superiors, and the human toll on families waiting for answers. Told across a single six-episode season of roughly forty-five minutes each, the series is a self-contained limited run rather than an open-ended procedural. Its setting is contemporary Britain, rooted in a grounded English police world of station corridors, interview rooms and quiet domestic spaces. The tone is restrained, sober and morally weighted, with a documentary-leaning realism that rewards patient viewers. Fans of Mare of Easttown, Broadchurch and Line of Duty will find resonance in its flawed investigator and its unflinching look at a true crime case.
