## Synopsis

Appare-Ranman! (2020) is a Japanese animated steampunk adventure series created as a P.A.WORKS and KADOKAWA production and broadcast on AT-X. Its protagonist is the genius but socially awkward engineer Sorano Appare, voiced by Natsuki Hanae, paired with the wise yet cowardly samurai Isshiki Kosame, voiced by Seiichiro Yamashita. Stranded at sea between Japan and America with no money, the pair enter the Trans-America Wild Race, a contest running from the starting line in Los Angeles to the finish in New York. Their engine is simple and concrete: they must keep the steam-powered car they built running, outwit rivals, and survive bandits and wilderness hazards while chasing prize money to get home. Each episode is built around a new obstacle on the road, giving the thirteen-episode run a brisk, episodic rhythm within a single continuing journey. The setting is a late nineteenth century American frontier of deserts and open roads. The mood is buoyant and comic, with warm chemistry between the odd-couple leads and a playful sense of invention. Fans of Wacky Races, Cannonball Run and Steamboy will find resonance in its blend of competitive road adventure and steampunk gadgetry.
