## Synopsis

Juliantina (2019) is a Mexican drama romance series created for Las Estrellas, a spin-off that spins its own story out of the Spanish-language soap opera Amar a Muerte. It follows Juliana Valdés (Bárbara López) and Valentina Carvajal (Macarena Achaga), two young women whose social status and education could hardly be further apart, yet whose friendship grows into something deeper. The engine of the show is the slow, uncertain move from friendship to love, with the everyday pressures of class difference and the courage it takes to express feelings openly shaping each episode. Its nineteen episodes make up a single self-contained season of roughly forty minutes each, with a continuing romantic storyline rather than a case-of-the-week format. Set in contemporary Mexico, the series carries the warm, earnest register of a telenovela while keeping a clear, hopeful focus on its couple. Its tone is sincere, tender and affirming, with an emphasis on the message that love is love. Fans of Heartstopper, Sex Education and the parent soap Amar a Muerte will find resonance in its blend of youthful romance, social divides and heartfelt queer representation.
