## Synopsis

The Republic (1998) is a Turkish national-television historical drama miniseries created for TRT 1. Its five 50-minute episodes follow the origins of the Turkish republic from the perspective of the people surrounding Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, played by Rutkay Aziz. Latife Hanım, portrayed by Dolunay Soysert, grows increasingly devoted to him while hosting his mother Zübeyde Hanım (Macide Tanır) in her home in İzmir as the city celebrates a victory. Meanwhile at Çankaya Mansion, the ailing Fikriye Hanım, shown by the cast, hides her worsening health from Mustafa Kemal until she is sent to a sanatorium as the War of Independence rages on. Savaş Dinçel plays İsmet İnönü, adding the political weight of the circle around the founder. The engine of the story is the tension between private devotion, illness and secrecy and the public demands of building a new state. Rather than staging battles, the series concentrates on households, letters and quiet conversations in drawing rooms and mansions, so each episode feels like a chamber piece set against national upheaval. Set in early twentieth century Anatolia and İzmir during the 1919 to 1923 independence struggle, it is a stately, reverent, melancholic drama with a respectful view of national memory. Viewers who enjoy The Crown, Lincoln and Gallipoli will find resonance in its blend of historical figures, intimate stakes and national myth.
