## Synopsis

Expats (2024) is an American prestige miniseries created by Lulu Wang for Prime Video, adapted from a novel. Nicole Kidman anchors the six-episode story as Margaret, an American expatriate in Hong Kong whose life is upended after a chain of events that involves her family and close circle of women. Sarayu Blue plays Hilary Starr, Jack Huston plays David Starr, and Ji-young Yoo plays Mercy, each caught in the same tangled web of loyalty and secrecy. The engine of the story is the question of who is responsible when a single catastrophe spreads through a privileged community, and each episode shifts the viewer's sympathies as characters trade blame and confront their own complicity. The drama moves between the glossy comfort of expatriate life and the dense, crowded streets of the city, where class, money and language divide the people living side by side. Its mood is melancholic and tense, with an undercurrent of moral unease that deepens as the consequences widen. Fans of Big Little Lies, The Undoing and The Staircase will find resonance in its intimate, character-driven examination of guilt, privilege and the fragile bonds between women. The limited run keeps the focus tight, and the result is a sober, carefully paced portrait of how people survive the choices they make.
