## Synopsis

My Daddy Long Legs (1990) is a Japanese animated family drama adapted from the novel Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster, produced by Nippon Animation and broadcast on Fuji TV. Judy Abbott (voiced by Mitsuko Horie) is a bright orphan raised in an institution who, at seventeen, receives a college scholarship and a monthly allowance from a mysterious benefactor. Her only obligation is to write him a letter every month addressed to Mr. John Smith, who has promised never to reply. Across forty episodes, her letters become the vehicle for her coming of age, as she navigates campus life, new friendships with Sally (Chie Sato) and Jimmy (Bin Shimada), and the ambitions of a young writer finding her voice. The series is a single season of forty episodes that unfolds as a gentle slice of life, with each episode built from everyday school routines, small rivalries, and the quiet hope of a girl trying to earn her place. Its tone is wistful and warm, with a nostalgic glow typical of the Nippon Animation literary adaptations. Fans of Anne of Green Gables, Heidi, Girl of the Alps and Jane Eyre will find resonance in its orphan heroine, unseen patronage, and earnest pursuit of self-expression.
