## Synopsis

The Vision of Escaflowne (1996) is a Japanese animated fantasy series created by Shoji Kawamori for TV Tokyo, produced by Sunrise. High school student Hitomi (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto) is hurled from modern Earth into the magical world of Gaea, where she meets the boy prince Van Fanel (Tomokazu Seki) and is swept into his struggle to unite its kingdoms against the Zaibach empire. Allen Schezar (Shin-ichiro Miki) and Millerna Aston (Mayumi Izuka) add romantic and political tension around her. Hitomi wants to find her way home while discovering a hidden ability that makes her essential to the war, and each episode of this single 26-episode season moves the conflict forward through battles, court intrigue and the giant machine known as Escaflowne. Its mysteries about Van's past and the mecha's origins unfold steadily across the run. Tarot readings and divination frame the story's sense of fate. The tone blends wistful romance with harrowing battle sequences and an anxious, melancholic undercurrent. Set in a fantastical medieval-style world, it is a 1990s anime with the emotional sweep of a shojo romance and the scale of a mecha war epic. Fans of Fushigi Yuugi, Record of Lodoss War and Gundam Wing will find resonance here.
