## Synopsis

Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan (2021) is a Japanese animated workplace comedy produced by Studio Blanc for TV Tokyo, a single-season anime of thirteen 24-minute episodes. Uramichi Omota, voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya, plays the cheerful exercise instructor of a children's television program whose upbeat on-screen manner hides a private weight of adult exhaustion. Around him, his coworkers, voiced by Tomokazu Sugita and Nana Mizuki, and other staff members keep letting their own anxieties and disappointments surface on air, so each episode is built from a broadcast studio's daily grind and the small humiliations of making children's programming. The engine is the gap between the bright performance demanded by the show and the difficult lives behind it. The tone is deadpan, wry and melancholic, with dark humor that treats depression and workplace dread lightly without dismissing them. Set in contemporary Japan, it takes a slice of life approach to the entertainment industry and reads as a josei-leaning companion to adult-focused anime comedies in the vein of BoJack Horseman and Silver Spoon, for viewers who enjoy comedy about worn-down grown-ups.
