## Synopsis

Genera+ion (2021) is an American teen drama created by Daniel Barnz and Zelda Barnz for HBO Max. Its single season of sixteen half-hour episodes follows a group of high school students whose frank exploration of modern sexuality, devices and all, pushes against the entrenched beliefs about life, love and family held in their conservative community. Nathanya Alexander plays Arianna, Chloe East plays Naomi, Justice Smith plays Chester, and Martha Plimpton plays Megan, with the ensemble carried by Nava Mau, Lukita Maxwell, Haley Sanchez, Uly Schlesinger, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Chase Sui Wonders. The engine of the show is the friction between adolescent curiosity and the adults who want to keep it contained, playing out in classroom confrontations, friendships tested by secrets, and the private conversations that happen after school. Each episode is built around a new situation that tangles the teens' intimate lives with the expectations of parents and peers, giving the series a candid, observational texture. The tone is frank and sometimes breezy, with an earnest curiosity about bodies, identity and belonging. Viewers who enjoy the candor of Euphoria and the warm teen ensemble of Sex Education will find a similar kinship here, though the series stays closer to the everyday rhythms of its community than to spectacle. Canceled after one season, it leaves its central questions open.
