## Synopsis

The Trial (2019) is an Italian crime drama series created by Alessandro Fabbri for Netflix, a single-season run of eight fifty-minute episodes. Vittoria Puccini plays Elena Guerra, a public prosecutor whose personal link to a murdered teen girl complicates every move she makes, while Francesco Scianna plays Ruggero Barone, a lawyer hungry for a career-making case. Their collision with a suspect who insists she is innocent drives the engine of the story: each episode pushes the investigation forward through interrogations, courtroom maneuvering, and the compromises professionals make when reputations are at stake. Co-stars Camilla Filippi and Simone Colombari round out a cast whose characters are all pulled into the case's orbit. Told as one continuing story rather than a case-of-the-week format, the series builds a steady, claustrophobic tension in contemporary Italy, with moral ambiguity and institutional pressure sharpening as the evidence shifts. Its tone is serious, austere, and suspenseful, with a restrained visual register and a theme of ambition colliding with justice. Fans of The Night Of, The Killing, and Gomorra will find resonance in its procedural rigor and human fallout. Set in present-day Italy, it rewards patient viewers who want a grounded legal thriller.
