## Synopsis

The Gloaming (2020) is an Australian crime drama series created by Victoria Madden for Stan. When an unidentified woman is found brutally murdered, detective Molly McGee (Emma Booth) teams up with fellow officer Alex O'Connell (Ewen Leslie), a man with whom she shares a tragic past that neither has fully left behind. Their investigation pulls them through a tense, grief-soaked small world of suspects and old wounds, with Lewis Grimshaw (Aaron Pedersen) and Grace Cochran (Rena Owen) adding weight to the case. The engine of the story is the slow excavation of what the victim's death uncovers, as the detectives must confront their own history while chasing the truth. Told across a single eight-episode season of roughly fifty minutes each, the series is a contained, serialized mystery rather than a case-of-the-week procedural. Its register is bleak and melancholic, with a brooding Australian atmosphere, heavy emotional undercurrents, and a steady, deliberate pace. Fans of Top of the Lake, Mystery Road and The Killing will find resonance in its moody, character-driven approach to crime and the damage people carry from the past.
