## Synopsis

VanDread (2000-2002) is a Japanese animated science fiction comedy series produced by GONZO and broadcast on WOWOW Prime. Its protagonist is Hibiki Tokai (Hiroyuki Yoshino), a male third-class laborer from Taraak who lands stuck on a battleship after a botched attempt to steal a robot. The engine of the show is his scramble to survive among a crew of female pirates who have seized the Taraakian Vanguard, a situation that only gets more chaotic. Supporting characters include Barnette Orangello (Michiko Neya), Duelo McFile (Hideki Tasaka), and Jura Basil Elden (Yuu Asakawa). Each episode mixes ship-board antics with mecha combat, and the show runs across two seasons of thirteen episodes each for a total of twenty-six episodes. The tone is breezy and bawdy, with fan-service humor and a comic romantic undercurrent layered over the action. Fans of Tenchi Muyo! GXP and Super Robot Wars will find a similar blend of mecha spectacle and playful ensemble comedy, and the anime suits viewers who enjoy irreverent space adventure with a lighthearted edge.
