## Synopsis

Cruel Summer (2021-2023) is an American psychological thriller series created by Bert V. Royal and aired on Freeform. Set across three summers from 1993 to 1995 in a small Texas town, the story follows popular teen Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt), who is abducted, and Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia), a sweet and awkward outlier who transforms into the most popular girl in town and then the most despised person in America. Jamie Henson (Froy Gutierrez) and Mallory Higgins (Harley Quinn Smith) round out the principal circle of classmates whose loyalties and secrets pull against one another. The engine is a puzzle of who did what and why, pieced together as each episode revisits the same events through different characters' eyes. Two seasons of ten episodes each keep the mystery serialized, with each summer peeling back another layer of adolescent cruelty and small town silence. The mood is sun-bleached and uneasy, a hot nineties suburban dread in which teenage ambition and public scorn mix dangerously. Fans of Twin Peaks, Pretty Little Liars and Sharp Objects will find resonance in its layered secrets and atmosphere of unease.
