## Synopsis

The English (2022) is a British prestige western miniseries created by Hugo Blick for BBC Two, a six-episode limited series. Emily Blunt plays Lady Cornelia Locke, an aristocratic Englishwoman who arrives in the raw, untamed American West of the 1890s determined to avenge the death of her son. Her path crosses that of Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), a Pawnee scout whose own history and loyalties complicate her quest, while the frontier towns, hired guns and lawmen she encounters test her resolve at every turn. Each episode is built from a sequence of confrontations, uneasy alliances and shifting debts, and the story steadily tightens around a single vengeful goal. The mood is melancholic and austere, with grief and class tension running beneath violent set pieces, and the dialogue is deliberately lyrical and heightened. Its sweeping landscapes are shot with painterly care, giving the series a contemplative, almost poetic register. Fans of Deadwood, The Revenant and The Proposition will find resonance in its brutal frontier world and its revenge-driven moral reckoning. Viewers looking for a stylish, character-led western with a literary edge will find much to admire here.
