## Synopsis

Freud (2020) is an Austrian and German historical crime series created by Marvin Kren and Stefan Brunner, broadcast on ORF 1. Robert Finster plays a hungry young Sigmund Freud, eager to make his name in 19th-century Vienna, who joins a psychic and an inspector to solve a string of bloody murders. Manuel Ossenkopf plays Frantisek Mucha, the inspector grounded in the city's hard-edged police work, while Georg Friedrich plays Alfred Kiss, a figure whose secrets pull the investigation deeper into the city's fashionable and shadowed circles. Ella Rumpf appears as Fleur Salome, and Mercedes Muller plays Martha Bernays, tying the procedural threads to Freud's private life. The engine is the tension between Freud's ambition and the rigid institutions that doubt his methods, as each case forces him to test theories of the mind against brutal physical evidence. Across one eight-episode season of roughly fifty-two minutes each, the series builds a dark, dreamlike atmosphere of smoke, candlelight, and unsettling psychology. Its mood is gothic and eerie, with a historical period drama texture. Fans of Ripper Street, The Alienist and Babylon Berlin will find resonance in its blend of period crime and psychological darkness.
