## Synopsis

Unorthodox (2020) is a German-American limited series created by Anna Winger and Alexa Karolinski for Netflix. Shira Haas plays Esther Shapiro, a young woman raised in a strict Hasidic community in Brooklyn who escapes an arranged marriage and flees to Berlin, where she is taken in by a group of musicians. Amit Rahav plays her estranged husband Yakov, and Jeff Wilbusch plays Moische, a figure whose pull threatens her fragile new independence. The engine of the four-episode story is Esther's attempt to build a life of her own while the community and family she abandoned press in from across the Atlantic, with each episode alternating between her cramped childhood world in Brooklyn and her unfamiliar, music-filled days in Berlin. The tone is intimate and observational, tender yet tense, with a hopeful undercurrent of self-discovery shadowed by dread. Its focus on religious ritual, womanhood and the cost of freedom gives the drama a grounded, emotionally direct texture. Fans of Shtisel, My Brilliant Friend and Babylon Berlin will find resonance in its blend of cultural specificity and suspenseful personal stakes, a self-contained story built for one sitting.
