## Synopsis

The Wolf (2020) is a Chinese period drama series created by Chen Yushan and Wang Wei for Tencent Video, with the series also airing on iQiyi and Youku. Set toward the end of the Tang Dynasty in the aftermath of a usurped throne, it follows a boy raised in the wild who is adopted by the usurper Zhu Wen and renamed Zhu Youwen. Darren Wang plays Chu Youwen, now the Prince of Bo, whose kindness and sense of righteousness set him apart from the ruthless court around him. Li Qin plays Ma Zhaixing, the governor's daughter he falls for, and the two are drawn into a struggle for power that tests their loyalty and affection. Xiao Zhan plays Ji Chong, while Ding Yongdai plays Zhu Wen, anchoring the court's dynastic conflicts. The series runs for one season of 49 episodes, a single continuing story in which palace intrigue, misunderstanding and self sacrifice drive each stretch of the narrative. Its register is romantic and melancholic, with heartbreak and loyalty weighed against ambition. Fans of Nirvana in Fire and The Story of Minglan will find resonance in its blend of court intrigue and star crossed romance.
