## Synopsis

The Innocence Files (2020) is a Netflix true crime documentary miniseries created by Roger Ross Williams and Alex Gibney. Across nine episodes of roughly fifty-eight minutes each, it follows eight separate cases of wrongful conviction that the Innocence Project and its wider Innocence Network have worked to highlight and overturn. Each episode is built around the personal stories of the people whose lives were upended: the exonerated men and women who spent years behind bars, the families who waited for them, and the lawyers and advocates who rebuilt the evidence. Interviews with the wrongly convicted, their relatives and their legal teams are interwoven with dramatized reenactments of the original crimes and the flawed police and courtroom work that produced false verdicts. The engine of each story is the slow, stubborn effort to prove innocence against an indifferent system. The tone is sober, angry and humane, more tragic than triumphant, with a strong sense of institutional failure. Viewers who appreciated the investigative rigor of Making a Murderer or the sympathetic portraiture of When They See Us will find resonance here. It is a limited series built for adults who want serious, evidence-driven true crime.
