## Synopsis

Adult Material (2020) is a British television drama miniseries created by Lucy Kirkwood for Channel 4. Across four one-hour episodes, it follows poster girl Jolene Dollar (Hayley Squires), a performer in the porn industry who juggles her on-set persona with motherhood and her home life. Her colleagues and loved ones round out the picture, including Siena Kelly as Amy, Joe Dempsie as Rich, Julian Ovenden as Tom Pain, Kerry Godliman as Stella Maitland and Rupert Everett as Carroll Quinn. The engine of the story is the friction between what Jolene is paid to project on camera and the demands of the family and domestic life she is trying to protect, played out in grounded workplace scenes and intimate kitchen-table moments. The show is a single contained run rather than a long-running series, giving it a compact, focused arc. Its tone is frank and unsentimental, with a sharp, observational wit and a melancholic undercurrent about labour, image and intimacy. Fans of The Deuce, Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Years and Years will find resonance in its adult workplace setting and its close attention to a woman navigating public and private selves.
