## Synopsis

Marvel's 616 (2020) is a Disney+ documentary docuseries that was canceled after a single season of eight episodes, each running about fifty minutes. Rather than a single narrator, it rotates through a different filmmaker per episode, each helming a standalone look at Marvel's characters, creators and fandom. The engine is curiosity about how comics became a global pop culture force: episodes draw on interviews with writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, critic Kōsei Ono, and toy designer Katsushi Murakami, along with archive footage of Stan Lee. Several episodes trace how Marvel characters travelled into Japanese tokusatsu, stunt work, suit acting and toy design, including a Spider-Man thread involving Shinji Tôdô and Rika Miura. The overall shape is an anthology of short essays rather than one continuing story, so episodes can be watched in any order. The tone is warm, nostalgic and celebratory, aimed at comic readers and pop culture enthusiasts. Fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Defiant Ones and fan-culture documentaries will find a similar pleasure in franchise history told through its makers and devotees.
