## Synopsis

Paranoia Agent (2004) is a Japanese psychological animated mystery series created by Satoshi Kon for WOWOW Prime, produced by Madhouse. Set in contemporary Musashino, Tokyo, it follows detectives Keiichi Ikari (Shozo Iizuka) and Mitsuhiro Maniwa (Toshihiko Seki) as they chase Lil' Slugger, an elementary schooler on golden inline skates who strikes random people with a bent golden baseball bat. The engine of the series is the hunt itself, complicated by victims who cannot recall the attacker's face and by a rumor mill that turns the boy into a popular urban legend. Each of the thirteen episodes, roughly twenty-five minutes long, shifts perspective to a different character whose life is unsettled by the fear, and the fragments gradually fit into a single serialized arc. The show is a thirteen-episode limited run told in one continuing story. Its tone is eerie, paranoid and wry, with a surreal edge that blurs waking life and fantasy, and its themes center on guilt, anxiety and the pressures of modern urban life. Fans of Serial Experiments Lain and Perfect Blue will find resonance in its unsettling blend of psychological suspense and anime craft, and its rewards come from sustained attention to its shifting viewpoints.
