## Synopsis

Katla (2021) is an Icelandic science fiction mystery series created by Sigurjón Kjartansson and Baltasar Kormákur for Netflix. Set in a small Icelandic town a year after a subglacial volcano erupts, the story follows residents whose lives are upended as mysterious elements from prehistoric times surface from the melting ice. The cast includes Guðrún Ýr Eyfjörð as Gríma, Íris Tanja Í. Flygenring as Ása, and Ingvar E. Sigurðsson as Þór, each pulled into the uncertainty that follows the disaster. Across a single season of eight hour-long episodes, the drama builds through strange discoveries, shifting alliances, and the unsettling sense that the landscape is hiding something older than human memory. Its engine is a community trying to make sense of what the eruption has revealed while the consequences grow harder to contain. The tone is chilly, brooding, and atmospheric, with slow-building dread and a melancholy sense of loss shaped by the stark Icelandic landscape. Fans of Trapped, The Terror, and Fortitude will find resonance in its blend of remote-community tension, natural catastrophe, and eerie mystery. The series is a compact, adult-oriented limited story for viewers drawn to nordic mystery.
