## What critics say

Critics and audiences broadly agree that Staged is a sharp, witty and inventive pandemic-era comedy, acclaimed for its performances and its self-aware take on the lockdown creative process.

## Synopsis

Staged is a British comedy series in which David Tennant and Michael Sheen play fictionalized versions of themselves, two famous actors preparing a West End production under director Simon Evans. When the pandemic shuts the theatres, the rehearsal is forced onto video calls, and the show is built from these home-screen conversations. The gap between grand theatrical ambition and the awkward reality of unreliable internet, cramped living rooms and tech failures becomes the engine of the comedy. Ego clashes, petty bickering and sudden flashes of genuine craft talk keep the mood brisk and playful, while a quieter undercurrent of loneliness and stubborn resilience runs beneath the jokes. Each short episode feels like a snatch of a video call, giving the series an intimate, mockumentary-like awkwardness. Across its seasons the lockdowns shift and the project shifts with them, so the story stays a wry, self-aware sendup of celebrity, the stage and the strange business of making art when the world has stopped. Its tone is breezy and sincere about theatre, warm and funny rather than cynical, and its humour rests on the friction between vanity and devotion.
