## Synopsis

Gankutsuou (2004-2005) is a Japanese animated science fiction drama series produced by GONZO and broadcast on TV Asia, a single season of twenty-four episodes adapted from the novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Set in an elegant future Paris, the story follows the young nobleman Albert de Morcerf (Jun Fukuyama) as he becomes entangled with a mysterious returned Count (Jouji Nakata) who is orchestrating a revenge campaign against the men who betrayed him. Franz d'Epinay (Daisuke Hirakawa) sits among the privileged circle whose secrets and vanities are slowly exposed. Each episode peels back another layer of aristocratic scheming, with the engine of the season driven by patient, calculated vengeance and the question of who is manipulating whom. The visual design is its signature: ornate period fashion and architecture set against spacefaring technology, giving the show a decadent, dreamlike atmosphere. Its tones are melancholic, sumptuous and tense, with a mature weight to the tragedy. Fans of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Code Geass and the classic Count of Monte Cristo will find resonance in its blend of class conflict, betrayal and elegant intrigue.
