## Synopsis

The Essex Serpent (2022) is a British period drama miniseries created for Apple TV, a six-episode limited series set in late Victorian Essex. Claire Danes plays Cora Seaborne, a newly widowed London woman who moves to a marshland village to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. Her skeptical, scientific mind clashes with and gradually softens toward the local vicar Will Ransome, played by Tom Hiddleston, whose own faith is tested by their unlikely friendship. Frank Dillane plays a surgeon whose rational pursuits intersect with the village's fears, and Clémence Poésy and Hayley Squires round out a cast of townspeople. The engine of the story is Cora's pursuit of evidence against a backdrop of grief, hidden tensions, and a community that turns on her when tragedy strikes. Each episode unfolds as a deliberate, atmospheric investigation shaped by letters, debates, and the damp textures of the marsh. The tone is melancholic and contemplative, with a romantic undercurrent and a fascination with the boundary between knowledge and belief. Fans of Jane Eyre, Wolf Hall and Ripper Street will find resonance in its period detail, intellectual heroine and gothic atmosphere, a bittersweet story told with restraint and quiet emotional weight.
