## What critics say

Critics widely panned the series for abandoning the franchise's core horror and characters in favor of a stilted, unfocused post-apocalyptic family drama.

## Synopsis

Resident Evil is an American science fiction horror series for Netflix, a loose adaptation of the video game franchise. Ella Balinska plays Jade Wesker, a woman who survives years after a viral outbreak has collapsed the world, and who vows to bring down the people responsible while fighting to stay alive among the Infected. The engine of the series is a hunt for answers inside a ruined landscape, where each episode is built from scavenging, escape and shifting alliances against monstrous creatures and a shadowy corporate machine. Its tone is bleak and dread-filled, with tense survival set-pieces and a steady undercurrent of grief. Teen melodrama runs through the family storyline, so the series often feels more like angsty family drama than pure horror. Set in a near future devastated by contagion, it offers outbreak dread and survival grit for viewers who want apocalyptic tension with an emotional core. The single season ends with its central mystery largely unanswered, leaving the story open and unfinished.
