## Synopsis

Love in Chains (2019-2021) is a Ukrainian national-television period drama series created for STB, a serialized costume melodrama spanning four seasons and ninety-six episodes. Kateryna, a bondmaid raised with the manners of a noble lady, is held as property by the richest landowner in Nizhyn, the wealthy Chervinskyi household. Across the series she struggles for her freedom and the right to be happy, enduring the deaths of people she loves, becoming the property of a woman who hates her, and fleeing pursuers who want to possess her. Hanging over every episode is the question of whether a woman born into servitude can claim a life of her own. Supporting characters around her are played by Katerina Kovalchuk, Serhiy Strelnykov, Maxim Radugin and Olha Sumska, who anchor a cast of landowners, suitors and servants. Lavish costumes and sweeping rural estates give the melodrama its rich look, and its register is emotional, romantic and harrowing. Fans of Outlander, Poldark and Downton Abbey will find resonance in its blend of period romance, class conflict and sweeping hardship.
