## Synopsis

The Challenge: ETA (2020) is a Spanish documentary docuseries broadcast on Prime Video, running eight episodes of roughly fifty-eight minutes each in a single season. Its episodes follow the Guardia Civil, the militarized police force that fought for nearly half a century against ETA, a ruthless armed group that carried out murder, kidnapping, extortion and arms and drug smuggling while demanding independence for the Basque Country in northern Spain. Former political figures, including José María Aznar and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, appear alongside senior security figure José Antonio Ardanza and other participants, so the account is shaped by testimony from both the state and its opponents. Each episode builds through a sequence of operations, arrests, political negotiations and the costs borne by officers and civilians, giving the series a steady, chronicle-like momentum rather than a single case. The tone is sober, grave and investigative, with a heavy atmosphere of fear and political stalemate. Its shape is a single continuous history of a long campaign, not a collection of unrelated cases. Viewers drawn to the political documentaries of Patria and the investigative depth of The Staircase will find resonance in its careful weighing of state power, violence and historical memory.
