## Synopsis

General Hospital (1963-present) is an American daytime soap opera created by Frank Hursley and Doris Hursley for ABC. Set in the fictional upstate New York city of Port Charles, the serial follows families, friends, enemies and lovers whose lives are upended by sudden illness, scandal and crime. Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) runs a waterfront empire where danger is never far from the docks, while Jason Morgan (Billy Miller) carries secrets through the violent underworld and Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) navigates legal battles and romantic betrayals. Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) anchor the hospital storylines, where medical emergencies collide with private rivalries. Each episode is built from overlapping romances, custody fights, kidnappings and boardroom schemes, and the story never resolves into a single arc, instead cycling through years of interlocking plots. The tone swings from melodramatic heartbreak to tense crime thriller, with a warm, familiar atmosphere in the diner and hotel scenes. Viewers who love long running serialized soaps such as The Young and the Restless and Dallas, or the medical intrigue of ER, will find resonance in its sprawling cast and emotional stakes. With a run now past forty-five seasons and over ten thousand episodes, it remains an enduring daytime institution.
