## Synopsis

Wonder Egg Priority (2021) is a Japanese animated psychological drama created for Nippon TV and produced by CloverWorks, a single-season anime of twelve episodes running about twenty-three minutes each. It follows Ai Ohto, voiced by Kanata Aikawa, a withdrawn young girl who keeps one eye hidden behind her hair and avoids everyone around her. After she stops at a deserted arcade and meets the mysterious Aka, she spins a gacha machine and receives a Wonder Egg, which opens a surreal alternate reality. Within this dreamlike space she meets other troubled schoolgirls, including Neiru Aonuma, voiced by Tomori Kusunoki, and Rika Kawai, voiced by Shuka Saito, and the series gradually uncovers the hurt each of them carries. Each episode is built around a different girl's ordeal and the mechanics of the Wonder Egg world, while the school setting and everyday life press in from the edges. The tone pairs a bright, colorful anime surface with an undercurrent of dread, melancholy and quiet hope. Fans of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Serial Experiments Lain and Mononoke will find resonance in its surreal, trauma-laden storytelling and its contrast between pretty visuals and heavy emotional material.
