## Synopsis

Chainsaw Man (2022) is a Japanese animated dark fantasy series produced by MAPPA and broadcast on TV Tokyo, adapted from the manga and running for a single twelve-episode season. Denji, a debt-ridden young man, is forced by yakuza bosses into hunting devils to pay off his crushing debts, and his modest dream of a quiet life with a girl he likes keeps slipping away. He fights using his pet devil Pochita as a living chainsaw weapon, and the engine of each episode is a brutal monster hunt paired with the grind of scraping together cash. Kikunosuke Toya voices Denji, while Tomori Kusunoki voices the enigmatic Makima and Shogo Sakata voices the fellow hunter Aki Hayakawa, whose loyalties and pasts add a web of tension to the group. The series is a tight, self-contained arc that moves briskly, shifting from tragic sorrow to sudden absurd comedy without losing its emotional weight. Its gory action is stylish and loud, and its world is an underground of cruel bosses, secret organizations and supernatural horror set in present day Japan. Its tone is melancholy, mischievous and visceral. Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen and Hellsing Ultimate will find similar dark supernatural combat and bleak humor.
