## Synopsis

Helsinki Syndrome (2022-present) is a Finnish crime drama series created by Miikko Oikkonen and produced for Yle TV1 and Yle Areena, with a Nordic thriller sensibility. Peter Franzén plays Elias Karo, a family man who takes four journalists hostage at their newspaper headquarters, desperate to make them reveal the wrongdoing that wrecked his family during the 1990s recession. Oona Airola plays journalist Hanna Raivio, one of the captives whose professional instincts and survival collide with the captor's demands, while Taneli Mäkelä, Laura Malmivaara and Antti Luusuaniemi fill out the newsroom and the people tied to the old scandal. The engine of the series is a pressure-cooker standoff: each episode turns on negotiation, tangled loyalties and the slow unearthing of who knew what during the crisis years. The show runs as a serialized story across two seasons and fourteen episodes, with the first season and a second season that followed after a gap. Its story is set in present-day Finland, where the hostage room becomes a stage for the past. The mood is tense, claustrophobic and morally uneasy, with a sober, restrained style that rewards close attention. Fans of Money Heist, The Wire and Dog Day Afternoon will find resonance in its hostage stakes and its social conscience.
