## Synopsis

The Innocent (2021) is a Spanish crime thriller miniseries created by Oriol Paulo and Jordi Vallejo for Netflix. Mario Casas plays Mateo Vidal Rivera, a man whose accidental killing sends him down a dark hole of intrigue and murder. Just as he begins to build a life of love and freedom, a single phone call drags the nightmare back into view. The engine of the show is his desperate effort to contain the consequences of one act, with each episode peeling back another layer of deception and buried history. Xavi Sáez and Santi Pons appear among the principal cast, and Aura Garrido plays a woman whose identity is tangled in the mystery. Told in eight hour-long episodes, this limited series moves as one continuous story, with flashbacks and reversals keeping the pressure high. Its tone is tense, dark and paranoid, with a bleak undercurrent of guilt and consequence. Set in present-day Spain, it has the mood of Spanish crime fiction and true crime. Fans of The Night Of, Money Heist and Ozark will find resonance in its layered suspense and morally compromised hero.
