What critics said
Critics broadly recognized the film's energetic affection for 1970s blaxploitation while finding its scattershot, often offensive humor uneven.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film directly parodies 1970s blaxploitation heroes, villains, costumes, macho posturing, and revenge plots.
Jack's crusade against Mr. Big and the assembled warrior entourage turn action-movie conventions into broad comic spectacle.
The film satirizes the blaxploitation image of the hypermasculine black criminal hero and the white fantasy behind that image.
The story's revenge mission is presented through clowning, over-the-top action, and intentionally silly confrontations.
