What critics said
Critics found the strong cast, especially Jessica Lange, unable to overcome sodden pacing and an overly familiar tragic-affair story.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Thérèse and Laurent's illicit affair escalates from escape to tragic consequences.
Thérèse is trapped in the shop, marriage, and household governed by Camille and Madame Raquin.
The shop and evening domino gatherings turn domestic spaces into visibly restrictive environments.
The screenplay adapts Émile Zola's Thérèse Raquin and retains its nineteenth-century tragic naturalism.
