What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The Maysles brothers observe Edith and Edie in their mansion while the women address the camera, interrupt one another, and control the conversational flow.
Edie's combat-like outfits, Edith's former society identity, and their theatrical conversations make self-presentation central to the portrait.
Edith and Edie display flinty affection while arguing, talking over each other, and hinting at long-standing dependency and resentment.
Grey Gardens' crumbling rooms, cats, raccoons, and accumulated domestic clutter frame the women's stories and present-day confinement.
