What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Muriel’s marriage to Lee provides the respectable surface from which her secret romantic life gradually emerges.
Muriel’s racehorse betting and casino life turn gambling into a concrete form of independence and self-discovery.
The 1950s setting and Muriel’s lesbian relationship place same-sex desire in conflict with conventional marriage and public respectability.
The film’s marriage-centered premise and 1950s milieu make domestic interiors and formal social settings central to its visual identity.
