What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
District 9 confines extraterrestrial refugees in a militarized Johannesburg ghetto, echoing South African segregation and xenophobia.
The story is intercut with interviews and media footage that frame Wikus’s eviction operation as a reported public event.
Wikus’s exposure to alien chemical material progressively changes his body and destabilizes his human identity.
District 9 is portrayed as a squalid, militarized settlement managed through eviction orders, corporate force, and weapons research.
